Crazy in Paradise

Crazy in Paradise - Deborah Brown I received this book as an Advanced Readers Copy from Goodreads. Thanks Goodreads.

Madison Westin is a recently divorced woman who inherits her dead aunt's beachfront cottages in Florida. She also inherits her house and all the crazies that show up.

I was really looking forward to this book but it fell a little short. The dialogue was robotic, she accepted things that actual humans with common sense would not. For example, a hunky private eye with a gunshot appears in her backyard and there is an instant romance between them. I'm sure the author wanted to make her out to be a tough girl but she was just annoying and I didn't like her as a main character.

All in all, this book was just okay.

One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd

One Thousand White Women: The Journals of May Dodd - Jim Fergus This was a very good book. It is the fictional story of the Cheyenne Indians requesting 1,000 white women from President Grant. The Cheyenne wanted to have children with the white women in order to have their children be accepted by white people. The government hoped that the brides would help the Indians assimilate to the white culture. This book is the "journals" of one of those women. May Dodd escaped an insane asylum where her family had put her for her promiscuity. She was promised freedom, if she volunteered for the program. Her goal was to spend her two years with the Cheyenne and regain her freedom so she could reunite with her two children who were taken from her when she was committed to the asylum. Very interesting story.

The Power of Six

The Power of Six - Pittacus Lore This book was really good. It is the 2nd in the Lorien Legacies series. John Smith, Number Four, is a fugitive from the law. He travels with Six, Sam and Bernie Kosar. We are also introduced to Marina, Number Seven. We learn that she is living in Spain, in an orphanage and her Cepan has given up. I don't want to give anything away but we briefly meet Number Nine and we learn who two of the travelers in the second rocket are. This book was an easy read and had lots of action. I can't wait for the next one.

Well-Offed in Vermont

Well-Offed in Vermont - Amy Patricia Meade This is the story of Stella and Nick who buy a house in Vermont. Before they can unload their truck, a body is found in their well. The police make their house a crime scene and the only way to move things along and move into their house is to solve the mystery of who killed Allen Weston. Nick and Stella start questioning the locals and it turns out, lots of people had reason to hate and even kill Mr. Weston. With lots of quirky characters, this book was lots of fun to read.

The Maid: A Novel of Joan of Arc

The Maid: A Novel of Joan of Arc - Kimberly Cutter I really enjoyed this book. Joan of Arc was a courageous woman, a deeply religious woman. This books was moving and very intense. Could her voices have been the voice of God's angels, many people today think that it was mental illness. I don't know. But this book took us through her childhood, the voices, her intent to get to the Dauphin, the battles she fought and her imprisonment. Very good book.

The PMS Murder: A Jaine Austen Mystery

The PMS Murder: A Jaine Austen Mystery - Laura Levine This was a good one. Jaine is trying to get a job, solve a murder and keep her cat on a diet. Funny. Quick read.

The Camel Club

The Camel Club - David Baldacci This is a great book. It reminds me of the Bourne series. Action packed, espionage, and lots of great characters.

Killer Blonde

Killer Blonde - Laura Levine Very funny mystery series. I love her interactions with her cat. Loved it. Quick read.

Mockingjay

Mockingjay - Suzanne Collins This book was so good! The third and final installment in the Hunger Games series. I don't want to give away what happens in the first two books. So I'll just say that the rebellion is on and war takes place between the districts and the capitol. The victors picked up from the end of book 2 are split some are picked up by the rebels and others by the Capitol. It was exciting and sad and I loved this book. I recommend it!

Catching Fire

Catching Fire - Suzanne Collins This book was a great sequel to the Hunger Games. I don't want to give anything away from the first book so I'll just say that the winner of the Hunger Games has an enemy in President Snow which sparks a rebellion in several of the districts. So another Hunger Games happens with some familiar people. Good ending.

Twilight

Twilight - Stephenie Meyer Bella = clumsy. Ok, we get it.

Blessings

Blessings - Anna Quindlen This book was sooooo good. It is not funny and doesn't have a happy ending but it was great. I was crying while reading it. It's the story of a baby that brings together an elderly woman who has secrets in her past and a young man who has never really had a family. Love it.
